Air Force shattered LTTE targets: The defeat of the LTTE terrorists in less than three years was made possible by the strong political leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa that paved the way for the three Armed Forces to coordinate action in the battle fronts. In this regard the officers, especially the pilots who worked with dedication helped destroy terrorist targets with precision so that the LTTE lost the coordination of men and material to face our Armed Forces, Air Chief Marshall Roshan Gunatilake said in an interview.

Kamalika Peiris in her interesting article ‘SL’s Admired innovations’ in the Sunday Island (Sept. 26) while quite rightly highlighting those of the SL Navy and the STF, has not mentioned the Army or the SLAF. The aim here is to outline details of Army innovations on its 61st anniversary which is on October 10. Terrain dictated tactics but did not deter bold strategy. In the Wanni jungles movement was almost totally on foot often wading in waist deep or more monsoon flood waters. Day visibility was about three to five metres at the best. Manoeuvrability for armoured vehicles was virtually non-existent. The fighting was old fashioned at very close quarters, face to face and very cruel. No quarter was asked for or given.

It arouses our curiosity to know what makes the Australian Greens in particular Senator Lee Rhiannon so anxious to move the Australian senate to bring a motion to suspend Sri Lanka from the Commonwealth and to even push for a war crimes tribunal against Sri Lanka? The motion was debated on September 22, 2011 and a second motion brought by the same Senator was defeated on February 9, 2012?
